I have attempted (with no luck) various other programs for USB over network but the best bet is really virtual here, though it is a shame it is no longer free for one USB device.

Just hit the sync button on the xbox one controller will in the bluetooth settings on the steam link and add the controller (additional device required in order to navigate menus). *******(Update ) The new Xbox One controllers no longer need the Xbox dongle and can connect to the steam link via Bluetooth. *Edited from just steam controller to "extra" controller. Know issue - wired Xbox one fallout 4 controller will not work as the "extra" controller.
